Communication TipsPosted in Ask a trainer on September 21, 2011 by Dawn Sillett So you’ve answered the really basic questions, such as:
With whom am I communicating? When is a good time? What is the best medium? (More on these in the monthly newsletter – sign up if you haven’t already done so) Tags: communication skills, development matters, coaching, dstc, dawn sillett Watch this if you care about learning and educationPosted in Ask a trainer on November 02, 2010 by Dawn Sillett I found Sir Ken Robinson’s RSA talk as moving as it is thought-provoking. His key point is that standardised testing of children kills off their innate genius by the time they enter secondary education. That and the often-routine prescription of medication for ADHD. Yet the child-like genius we all have inside is exactly what this constantly-changing, information-overloaded, globalised world needs now more than ever. Surely education should equip people for what they need to do in future rather than what their parents needed to do in the past. See Sir Ken’s talk here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDZFcDGpL4U It’s got me wondering if what organisations are doing – unwittingly, perhaps – is demanding people excel at tests, recruiting and training to a particular standard or set of competencies, and then after they’ve been there a little while, wondering where all the talented ones went as they look outside for the next senior appointment. How do I get professional development when there’s no budget left?Posted in Ask a trainer on August 04, 2010 by Dawn Sillett You want to develop, both personally and professionally. You’ve asked for training and been told there’s no budget left. You’re not alone. Many a budget holder has got part-way through the year to find there’s not enough budget to go round. If you’re affected by this, what can you do? Here are some thoughts:
Good luck and let me know how you get on! Tags: Goal-setting, Training & learning objectives, Training budgets, Training Robust learning objectivesPosted in Ask a trainer on February 10, 2010 by Dawn Sillett Here’s a pet rant: learning objectives that begin with ‘understand’ or ‘know’. Yeah right, people will just ‘know’ the stuff they’re being trained on. How will we know they know? How will we be able to tell they understand? What will be the signs? What will be better, different? How will an impartial observer be able to say, ‘yes, that training definitely worked’? Get the answer any of these questions and you will have far more robust – and measurable – learning objectives. Even better if they contain active verbs such as ‘explain’, ‘construct’, ‘articulate’, ‘prepare’, ‘deliver’ and ‘write’. Rant over. |
